“I know, and I think I did a good enough job burying Victor anyways…no one would be able to find him, it’s how I intended it.” That’d been a hard time for the coyote, actually having to bury his Master himself. He’d chosen a nice spot too, one that was under a weeping willow tree where white flowers constantly grew in a circle around it. He still didn’t quite know why people thought it was a good thing to do, to bury a body where things were serene with the hopes that they’d ‘enjoy’ it. It was one thing he wondered while he was pushing dirt back into the grave, and was also thinking of it now. Why did people bury their dead in places they think the departed would enjoy? Just another mystery for the ages.
His ears perked at the question, and he just chuckled “Didn’t you just ask me something?” he grinned a bit at that, though it disappeared quickly after he heard the real question behind it. “Well, that’s a good question.” Kiju laid down on his back on sleeping area and crossed his arms under his head “The first time I noticed it was when my parents had begun picking out a fiancé for me. They believed in arranged marriage you see. When I met her, I didn’t really like her in that way, though we became friends…nothing more. But the one I really started to like was her brother.” The coyote’s ears tinged pink “My parents naturally paired me up with another coyote, so her brother was one too. He was two years older than me, and was just starting to learn about…adult things.” He let Volyan guess as to what these ‘adult things’ were. “Well, one time while we were playing, we decided to play a game of ‘Do Your Worst’. Er…to explain it, basically it’s just we have to pick someone to do the worst thing we can think of to another. My ‘fiancé’ told me to kiss her brother. And when I did…well, let’s just say I enjoyed it a little too much than I should’ve…in fact, I liked it.”
A soft sigh as he remembered those innocent days…possibly the only years of his life he could call himself that. “Well, a few days after that I got up the courage to ask if I could kiss him again…he agreed, and…that’s when my parents found us.” He shook his head and grumbled softly “At first I wasn’t in trouble, since they just pushed it off as ‘foolish children’, until I told them why…I should’ve kept my maw shut, shouldn’t I?” the coyote looked up at Volyan and smiled, showing that he wasn’t sad about it anymore “Needless to say, I told you all of what happened after that, so…now you know how I am who I am.”

“I don't think you should have kept your maw shut…if your parents can’t accept you for what you are, then why stay with them? Why live a false life filled with false idols and false dreams – to not be able to chase the ones you want out of fear of the repercussions. The world is ever changing and if your parents couldn’t realize it, well, then shame on them for not getting to know their son as he grew up.” Volyan finished, settling into silence after his short speech. “Honestly, I pity them.” He broke the speech with those four words, before it settled in.
He never did like silence, it always left him to his thoughts…and his thoughts weren’t something he liked to be alone with, considering how confusing they are. He had to think of something before his thoughts consumed him – played with his emotions. “…You mentioned that someone in the palace had caught your fancy…” Volyan muttered, glancing door at Kiju. “Do you mind if I ask: ‘Who is he’? If you want to know something else about me, then…I’ll answer it.” Volyan paused, slowly bringing a paw up to tap at his chin. “My arranged wife I met but once…I didn’t take any interest in her, either,” Volyan muttered, but went on quickly, adding, “But, I think it was just because of the stress of the ordeal…” Volyan blushed lightly, knowing exactly how that would have sounded had he heard it. Basically, it came off in the same way it sounded when Kiju said it, really.
Unlike Kiju, Volyan had no story about his past love life, as, truthfully, he lacked one. The closest thing to a love life he had was that arranged marriage, and he had no interest in the female. Sure, she was pretty enough, was intelligent, and was young and would be able to, in quoting Walrik ‘bring a lot of little foxes into the world’ as they got older. But…she just didn’t catch his interest. Maybe it was because the fact it was prearranged, or perhaps he just wasn’t interested in foxes. After all, it wasn’t entirely unheard of for a fox to have a wolf as his mate, etc. Cross species relationships were frowned upon by the Church…which was altered by Akhaenniut, as well as same-sex relationships. Probably why Kiju was so quiet about it at first, before he trusted Volyan. Volyan had already planned to alter the Gods and Goddess to but three. Luna, the moon. Mother Earth, the land. And the Heaves, the sun and the sky. It was a tribal tradition that Volyan respected…give unto the Earth your respect and take only what you need, and it shall return onto you its grace and protection.

“I guess, I mean sure, if not for what happened I wouldn’t be there…even if I’ve said that enough times.” He chuckles again and looks out the window at the moon, his eyes reflecting the bright white shape in the sky. “I don’t quite know what happened to them after that, since I pretty much avoided their part of town after that, moving over to the Eastern quarter instead. I’ve half a mind to actually go and seek them out to let them know how I turned out.” He thought about this for a moment, then shrugged “Perhaps if you don’t need me after this I will…or if I get some free time sometime.” It was always something he’d wanted to do, to go back to his parents to see how much better he’d done because of their hatred. He knew that they’d expected him to starve and die that way, but he wondered what their reaction would be if they found him as an adult, well fed, and with more combat experience than his father had ever had. To say they’d be surprised would most likely be an understatement, and he really wondered what would happen if he knocked on their door.
Kiju looked up at Volyan suddenly as he mentioned that there was indeed someone who had caught the coyote’s fancy, but dare he tell Volyan? Sure, Volyan knew he was attracted to males only, but it might not be such a good idea to tell him who he was attracted to. Maybe some hints would suffice his curiosity “Well…he’s a fox, and…I’m guessing pretty high ranking, since he dresses rich…” he blushes faintly “Er…he’s really cute, and…has blue eyes that just take my breath away whenever I look at them.” The blush deepens, and Kiju slowly rolls onto his side, his back to the fox while he bites gently on his fisted paw. “I…I won’t say who though…sorry Volyan.” This much he could never tell the fox, it would complicate numerous matters and might get the one he spoke of in serious trouble with many powerful individuals…the buzzard paramount over all.
Kiju just lay there quietly, using a paw to pull the sheets up over his shoulders as he shivers a bit from the cold of the night. His eyes do eventually start to drift shut, and after a few minutes, his breathing becomes slow and controlled…he’d fallen asleep.

Morning After 'A Coyote's Game' Volyan yawned, shifting somewhat as he did, his muzzle buried in the soft fur of another. “Morning…” Volyan muttered, nuzzling the neck of the coyote in bed next to him. No doubt about it, Volyan was happy. Ecstatic, really, but…today was the day he had to return to his Imperial duties, starting with none other than Gnaeus’ report. Luckily, the older fox was willing to let the Emperor stay in his room until he was fully healed, duties or no, but…seeing he next to Kiju still wouldn’t be a good thing for either of them, Loyalist or not. “Best if we get up…” Volyan mused, a beam of sunlight flittering in on his bed from the single window. “Even if I don’t want to,” Volyan muttered, moving to remove his paws from around Kiju’s chest, and slide back the heavy sheets of his bed, stretching before he stood. Tail wagging behind him, he turned toward the coyote in his bed, and thought, “You’d best get dressed, too…and take a bath.” The fox flashed a smile, before putting picking his shirt up, brining it to his muzzle to sniff at, nodding his head before he threw it on. Well, what? He didn’t exactly have a lot of time to get ready when Gnaeus would be stopping by in less than a half an hour. “Take it you can get clean in thirty minutes?” Volyan asked, removing any wrinkles from his clothing as he did so. After all, he was fairly sure the coyote knew that he didn’t have to clean up all his fur and Volyan was lucky enough to have actually gotten clean last night, and thus didn’t need one himself. “In the mean time, I’ll be writing up the report in which is due to Gnaeus. And you…you just have to look like you do every day, like a mercenary.” Volyan really did hate that they had to hide their relationship, but…it was necessary for the larger picture, and they both knew that. The religion, at the moment, forbad same sex relationships and even the Emperor wasn’t above religious prosecution. Luckily, Kiju had brought over some of his clothing the night before…it’d be weird for him to wear Volyan’s clothing, after all.

The coyote stirred as he felt a muzzle shifting and rubbing at the back of his scruff, and his eyes slowly cracked open, accompanied by a soft sigh of contentment. Last night had been amazing, surely, and Kiju was feeling…refreshed after it all, and amazingly he wasn’t even sore this morning. He slowly turns his head back to face the fox as his arms leave Kiju’s chest. He knew they had to get up, but hated the thought of having to move from such a comfortable position: being pushed up against the Volyan’s chest with his arms around the coyote’s middle…most comfortable one he could think of. “Yeah, yeah…” he mumbled, and slowly sat up, maw opening wide in a yawn with his arms stretched up above his head. “Arrrrf…mrf…” were the grunted noises the coyote made while awakening himself, paws now rubbing at his eyes. He looked over to see the fox, and just paused to admire the view he was getting, a slight smile on his muzzle.
But, it didn’t last long, as the fox’s form was soon covered by clothing, and Kiju got up to go get his own on so that he would be presentable. He had to search around the bedroom, bending over and peeking under various pieces of furniture to see if he could find his clothes, which…turned out to be a difficult task. When in the passions of ‘bed-games’, one doesn’t know what happened to their clothes, especially when they practically blended in with the carpeting. Finally though, he found it, and proceeded to put on the two piece set of clothing that he always wore. “Mh…next time, I’m setting my clothes next to the bed…” he mutters, and pads back over to Volyan to wrap his arms around the fox’s chest and lean up to press a soft kiss to his lips “Morning Volyan…” the coyote said softly, and smiled, his tail wagging slowly. He didn’t smell any different than he normally did, just a bit more musky than normal, and a bit like Volyan, but that could be expected from being around the Emperor so often…right?

Volyan didn’t enjoy the view as much as Kiju had with him, much to caught up with work as he always was. He couldn’t wait until he became Prince once more and could settle into the life of a prince, with less work…maybe then this’ll be easier on both of them, or, at least, he certainly hoped so. Writing several short reports, and signing a couple documents, he continued to work until he heard Kiju’s words about leaving his clothing next to the bed, in which he stood up to face the now dressed Kiju, who, at the same time, approached him and wrapped his arms about his form – into which Volyan returned the embrace, and the lock of muzzles. “Mornin’ to you, too, Kiju…” Volyan muttered, rubbing his nose through the soft fur of Kiju’s neck, taking in coyote’s slightly musky scent…which could just be explained as exercise.
Breaking the embrace at the knock at his door, he brushed his muzzle through Kiju’s fur one last time. “Time to act as my guardian again, love…” Volyan muttered, before standing up straight, brushing any loose strands of cream coloured fur from his clothing, before approaching the door, unlocking it and opening it, to permit the fox on the other side entrance. “Gnaeus.” Volyan muttered, nodding his head slightly.
“My Emperor,” The fox bowed at the waist, before turning towards Kiju, “Mercenary.” And then entered the room, closing the door behind him as he did so, “Volyan, we have good news – another, a human this time, wishes to join our army. He served under Tarnan, supposedly, the mighty Minotaur who helped your father against Stratus.”
(Short...but my mum just...can't shut up and is constantly distracting me...)

Kiju smiled a bit and returned the nuzzle, his nose idly rubbing against the small scent gland located in all canine’s necks. Golden eyes closed as a murr rumbled in his chest, and, while he didn’t want to ever let go, he had to, but still gave Volyan just a little squeeze and a lick to the nose before releasing him “Yeah, I know.” With a sigh, he straightened out his vest and loin cloth, then went about strapping on his sword belt, checking each of his swords to make sure they could be withdrawn easily. An ear twitched, and he turned to face the door just as it was being opened to reveal another fox. Quietly, Kiju mused to himself ’How many foxes are there…not that I’m complaining, just means I’m in attractive company is all.’ He nodded at the mention of his…well, occupation, and managed a slight smile for this Gnaeus character. “Hello.” He said quietly, then stood a bit off to the side so that he appeared to be doing his job: guard duty.
Kiju watched the two, knowing that a little bit of eye-candy didn’t harm anything…so he just watched the two foxes, eye-balling some various features about the two, though not finding much anything he couldn’t find with Volyan…though some things couldn’t be proven until later in a relationship. He let a slight smile creep over his muzzle, but did nothing more while listening in “A human? Mh…never did like them, but if they’re allies to us, how bad can they be?” and a minotaur? Wow, something he hadn’t seen in…well, a long time. He remembered fighting along side one once, and how ferocious and physically strong they were in battle. And surprisingly not as stupid as most people thought, he was roughly pretty intelligent compared to most of the other soldiers. He’d made sure to stick close to that minotaur, and luckily, it got him through the battle alive.

One thing different about Gnaeus, and would be easy to spot, was the colourations that gave him his nick name, ‘The Backwards Fox’. His paws – both upper and foot – were white, rather than black, and his tail tip was black. A genetic defect is what he called it, but it made him easy to pick out in a room full of foxes, really, which was another reason why he was made a commander so young, he was easy to tell apart from the rest. And that led to his deeds in battle being spotted much easier than normal. “Hello, Kiju.” Gnaeus muttered. Now that they were in a closed off room, need of title and position seemed a little less needed, at least, to Gnaeus and Volyan alike, and Volyan guessed that Kiju wouldn’t mind being called ‘Kiju’ rather than Mercenary.
“Humans did help us in our fight against their own King…it is only fair that we at least accept him, for now. Who is he?” Volyan asked, making his way towards his desk, to grab the papers sitting there.
“Talis, I believe was his name, but I might be wrong. He is living in the city barracks and his followers, five hundred strong, are camped at the out post between here and the Endless Desert.” That region, for as long as Gnaeus could recall, was known as the ‘Cross Roads’, and had been under Imperial control for seventeen years, enduring wars against the Demons once in the Endless Dunes, and the rebels once in Antioch. Akhaenniut had actually done some good, by telling the Empire to take and hold that location. In doing so, it served as both a defensive location, and a powerful base of attack.
Volyan shrugged at the name, “I don’t remember very many of Tarnan’s followers, so I can’t be sure if that was one or not. But, the Minotaur was known for employing a great deal of Centaurs, Minotaurs, and Humans, so it does fit the bill.” Volyan turned towards Kiju next, to inform his lover of the situation, “The Tarnan Clan was situated over the seas, in the region known as the Antioch Isles. His Empire mysteriously vanished, and with it, so did his legacy. As to humans…we are their Masters now.” Volyan was rather happy about that, for years humans regarded them as mere ‘Dogs’ or ‘Mutts’, even going so far as slavery and forcing Anthros and Tauren to fight in wars against the Elves eons ago. “We took their region less than two years ago…the Dwarves and the human people themselves aided our conquest to over throw their current King.”

He nodded at the mention of his name this time, and padded closer to the pair to be considered a part of the conversation. While he himself didn’t really have any power or influence over things, yet, he still wished to be kept abreast of what was going on just in case a situation required such information. To be honest, the new fox was quite a sight, having looked like he’d stepped through some alternate dimension on his way here. But, he didn’t really pay attention to it too much, besides the fact that it made him look like a candy, although why Kiju thought that he couldn’t understand. Oh well.
“Talis…I remember seeing him. In fact, if I remember right I had a duel with him. He’s not all that bad really, although he could use a bit of work.” A slight smile “At least he’s not one of those higher-up nobles who think they’re too good for fighting alongside their soldiers in combat, nor afraid to get dirty. That’s always a plus.” There were countless times the coyote had to just stop in the middle of a battle to laugh as a noble was starting to get backed into a corner, always saying ‘Stop!’ like his word even mattered. There was also the instant when one of the human nobles got dirt on his expensive garments, and stopped in the middle of the battle to cry and try to clean it off. Needless to say, he got run through about a moment later by Kiju’s swords, the last thing the human said being “That’s not fair!”
His ears perked as he listened to the summary of a few years worth of history, nodding slowly afterwards “I see, wonder what actually happened to his empire. Maybe it’s returned somewhere else, I remember fighting beside a minotaur awhile back when we were quelling down a ‘social dispute’ between two minor nobles.” Kiju shrugs “Perhaps he came from that kingdom, I wouldn’t really know, wish I could remember his name though.” With a shrug, the coyote leaned against one of the bed posts and kept quiet for the rest of the conversation…unless he had something to comment about or say.
