Volyan settled into eating his own piece of chicken, eating it at a slower pace than Kiju. True, he doubted that Kiju’d mind if he dug into the leg as he so wanted to do, but years of forced manners had rubbed off on him, and he just couldn’t bring himself to rip the meat apart, hungry and or not. “Truth be told…” Volyan tried to summon up a fire ball, “I’ve gotten no better, emotions still vastly control my abilities, save for telekinesis, and, frankly, I don’t know what good I would be without it.” He was no expert swordsmen, but he knew that his blade did bring out the best of his abilities – more so in fire magic, as that was what the blade was imbued in ages ago.
“Mind you, I’m quite sure that I’ll be able to counter act some of those trickier fire balls you tossed at me next time much easier, but I am still no better at it.” Volyan took another bite of chicken, swallowing it before speaking once more, “Doesn’t mean I didn’t have fun, though. Quite the contrary, I enjoyed it.” Volyan nodded his head, before taking the last bite of his chicken and placing the bone on the tray, grabbing a pawful of various small fruits and popping them in his muzzle. Well, what? There was no proper way to eat something smaller than your finger nail. And it wasn’t like he was the only Imperial he’d seen scarping down fruit like that before…not to mention his long muzzle allowed him to fit all the fruit into his mouth.
“So…your first kiss was to your crush, right?” Volyan asked, going back to a subject that they brought up from time to time. While Volyan never had anything solid to put in, he did still like to hear about Kiju’s exploits…which would seem odd to many, considering where Volyan’s sexuality lie. “My first kiss was to…” Volyan tried to recall his first kiss, rubbing a paw along his chin as he thought, “One of the Imperial females. She thanked me for allowing her family to move into the palace via kissing me. I, frankly, didn’t enjoy it. Probably because I didn’t know her.”

“Heh, that may be true Volyan, but notice you weren’t angry, sad, scared, or any other strong emotion while you were using those fireballs.” He smiled a bit and leaned back while his powerful jaws cracked the brittle chicken bone and two, and he gobbled down the tasty marrow that it contained before continuing “I saw your paws, they were practically one spark away from catching on fire, you may have been using telekinesis for most of it, but you didn’t use it for all of your flame manipulation, which means…you’ve improved, even if just a little. But hey, it’s better than a kick in the tail, right?” a quiet chuckle, while he set the broken bone down, and used his claws to sever off another piece of the meat.
“I’m glad you did have fun though, always nice to know I can entertain someone without drawing my swords and performing a dance for them.” Now that he thought about it, he’d never shown Volyan one of his sword dances. He made a mental note to do so, and this large bathing room would do perfectly, since it was nearly pitch black twenty-four-seven. “In fact…after we’re done here, if you like, I can show you one. It’s been awhile…” he said, and pensively chewed on a piece of cartilage. “Well, yeah, I suppose it was. My fiancé’s brother was definitely my first kiss…though my first err…real kiss wouldn’t have been until Brunhi and I were together.” He blushed faintly and sighed in reminiscence of that moment. And…now that he was thinking about it, it was in a similar situation as this one, a dimly lit bathing room that was quite steamy. “Oh my…” was what he said, then blushed as he realized he said that out loud.

He figured that when one was on the move constantly, they used every part of the kill they could – bones included. If Volyan remembered, the bones of his hunts went to making grave markers, for a village Akhu had recently had exterminated. It was a cruel tactic, what he did…force the villagers to stay in their village and then light it on fire…laughing as it burned for weeks, or months on end. The lucky ones died from the volley of arrows, or in the initial fire. The ones that had it bad were those that had to watch the fire slowly consume them, killing their friends and family. And if the fire didn’t kill them, the thick, black, smoke did. Fire, Volyan had learned, can be a pretty thing, but at the same time it can cause the life of many to vanish in its twisting, fiery, rage. Some times, he wished Akhu’d die the same way…twisting in flames like he had done to countless others.
Volyan thought on it, giving Kiju a small smile, “Tonight perhaps, after we’ve both recovered. I’m quite sure that if you did your sword dance in the next hour that you’d pass out. But, I’d be quite happy to see it, actually, considering I never have seen a dance of swords before…” Sure, he had seen the wandering acts that traveled throughout the land, dancing for lavish banquets or for the personal pleasure of some rich noble, but a dance of swords was just all that more interesting. After all, a normal dance had no danger in it…at least, not for those that had been doing it for years. “Ah…still better than my first kiss, no?” Volyan mused, and then tilted his head as he heard the faint ‘Oh my’ from Kiju. “ ‘Oh my’ what?” Volyan asked, glancing into Kiju’s eyes with his own Ice Blue ones.

The coyote was silent for a few moments, before perking his ears up and looking at Volyan “Hm? Oh, it…it’s nothing, really, just…remembering something is all.” To keep himself from answering anything else, Kiju picked up another piece of the chicken and began eating it…a bit slower than before, so that he could calm himself down. What would happen if he actually…no-no, he couldn’t do that, it would jeopardize too many things by that simple action. But nobody would have to know…would they? No, the buzzard might be watching them even now…using the powers of skrying that some witch or wizard could sell. He shook his head slowly and sighed, then inhaled the last bit of chicken that he would eat, plus a few of the fruits to keep is diet away from being completely made up of meats…
“It’s nothing, I was just thinking something me and Brunhi did once, that’s all.” He looked down at his lap and used a napkin to wipe his muzzle of the grease from the roast bird “Don’t worry yourself about it.” He then quickly changed the subject “But yes, I could do a sword dance for you, I haven’t in quite some time though, so I might be a bit rusty.” The only times he’d actually done a sword dance was when he needed some money to keep himself from starving, and a noble’s military camp proved to be an able source of just such a thing. It was in fact where he got his nickname of sorts ‘Fire Dancer’.

Volyan made a ‘mrf’ sound, tilting his muzzle at what Kiju had said. He was half tempted to ask what, but didn’t. After all, he’d pried enough into his friend’s life, he didn’t need to pry anymore, at least, not yet. Several times he had mentioned the room was protected and that Akhu couldn’t seem to penetrate the layers of magic that protected it, and the reason he knew this was from an older spy in the Imperial Order – who was assassinated ‘mysteriously’ two days after he was uncovered. Every spy knew the risk of being found out, but strangely enough…Volyan wanted to make sure Kiju didn’t suffer the same fate as the rest should he be caught. Probably because none of the others saw him as more than just an Emperor. Kiju saw him as a friend, and someone he could confide in.
“Would you mind if I was worried about it?” Volyan questioned, bringing back up the subject after Kiju had tried to drop it. “You’ve told me about Brunhi quite often…what is it about this memory that makes you not want to tell me, huh?” Volyan asked, kneeling before the ‘yote and placing a paw under his chin, to raise his eyes to Volyan’s own. “C’mon now…you know I won’t break your trust, just like I know you won’t break mine. So…what is it?” Volyan asked, keeping his paw under Kiju’s chin, though gentle enough so that if Kiju began to look down again, or look away, his paw would simply drop away.

The coyote just remained silent, even when he heard the quiet grunt of his fox friend across from him. He knew what it was about, that he wanted to know what it was that Kiju was hiding…but he just couldn’t bring himself to tell Volyan. He hated making things awkward, and that would be a major understatement if the fox knew why Kiju was acting this way now. He also knew that this room, and the bedroom itself, were protected by magical spells, but that didn’t mean there was a hole, somewhere…he knew there always was a hole, there had to be one, or else the spell would collapse in itself. “Well, sort of, yes…I don’t like having you worried about me, mainly because there isn’t anything to worry about.”
Kiju tensed a hair as a paw was placed under his chin to lift it up so he would be looking directly at Volyan. His ears slowly folded back as he gazed into those blue eyes that always just took his breath away; it was like staring into a glowing sapphire. “I…” The coyote hesitated, and his eyes turn downcast, before he leaned closer with his muzzle tilted, and gently pressed his lips to the fox’s own. The simple action sent goose-bumps flooding along the coyote’s body, and his tail puffed up a tad from the sensation of little bumps raising up on his skin.
The contact was held but for a few blessed moments, before he slowly pulled back, and opened his eyes as the soft noise of a kiss broken echoed in the room. “The fact is Volyan…you’re just so…I think…” he shook his head, not able to really think clearly at the moment. So, when in doubt, make it simple. “I love you…” There…he’d said the three most powerful words in all of existence. Words that could break men, destroy nations, and turn back the tides of war. But in this case…only time would tell of the repercussions.

Volyan blinked at the Coyote’s words, shaking his head lightly as he did so, “You can say that there isn’t anything to worry about, but…I can tell there is. You’ve been acting awkward all week…” Volyan muttered. At first, he just thought the coyote was stressed from all the work of taking care of him and, needless to say, he felt a little guilty about that. But now that Kiju didn’t actually have to take care of him…he knew it wasn’t him and while that sense of guilt passed, so, too, did the sense of curiousness overcome him.
Volyan’s ice blue eyes stayed locked onto Kiju’s own golden ones, which in a way reminded him of his father’s eyes, just…softer – kinder and…when he thought of it, didn’t really remind him of his father’s eyes besides the hue. “You?...” Volyan asked, blinking in confusion before Kiju leaned up and…kissed him. To say he wasn’t expecting it would be an understatement but…why did his heart start racing? His tail fluff out? Now Volyan was confused, more so than he had been in a long while, but it wasn’t the same time of confusion. This was more of a…good confusion.
The moment the kiss was broken, Volyan could have done many a thing…pushed Kiju, shouted at him, hit him, called his guards...but he just, stayed in stun silence. Slowly calming himself down, he closed his muzzle, which had parted lightly at some point in time, and listened to Kiju’s confessions. “I…” Volyan didn’t know what to say, to be honest. Three simple words, he knew, would make this all so easy, there was no doubting that. “I…don’t know if I love you, yet.” Volyan glanced back at Kiju with a small grin, moving his paw to Kiju’s own, to give it a small squeeze. “I’m just…confused is all. After all, it isn’t every day you are kissed by a male…and like it.” Volyan gave a tiny grin, but thought over the current situation, “So…what does one do in this situation?” Volyan asked, truly unknowing himself.

To be honest right now, Kiju was a little shocked at himself for doing something like that. He just risked everything with such a stupid action…but it seems fate has chosen to smile on him once more, as his ears weren’t ringing with the shout for guards. The coyote just scooted closer to Volyan and…simply leaned on him, his head to the fox’s chest, being careful not to harm the not quite fully healed wound. “It doesn’t matter…all I know is…well, you’re fine with me being this way. It’s definitely an improvement on my original thoughts as to what might’ve happened.” He turned his paw pad up, and held Volyan’s paw in it, giving a soft squeeze in return “Let’s just say that at least I was your first male kiss…”
As to what to do now? “Well, I wouldn’t know actually…if you’d responded in kind to my feelings, I suppose we would’ve expressed them in a more…physical fashion, I guess…” he wasn’t too used to romance, having been in a mercenary troop where the most romantic thing one could do would be to sit at the campfire, so…that was how he thought love worked out. Whether it was wrong or not, that was his feelings on the matter “But…I doubt you actually want to do that with a mercenary, especially one who might be leaving eventually.” He thought about it for a moment, then shrugged and lifted his head away from the fox’s chest to look up at him “If you want…we could kiss again.” A simple suggestion…but Kiju could live with kisses from this cute fox, love or not.

Volyan didn’t exactly know what to do as Kiju leaned on him, but he went with what felt best, wrapping his arms around the coyote. In less than a minute his life had gone from happy, content, and having a friend to happy, confused and…having something more than a friend, regardless of gender. Suddenly, gender in a mate, to Volyan, was a little less important. “We don’t just have to say it, after all…it is true.” And it was. Volyan was already thinking ahead, to what Akhu’s reaction to the situation would be, let alone the nation should it get out. “We…have to keep this between us, you know that, right?” Volyan really didn’t think something like this should be hidden away, shared only in truly private moments, but…not everyone shared his views, and the Church held a lot of influence over the land.
Volyan shook his head, grinning at that, “I don’t expect anything physical from you until I know I love you as it is…” Volyan admitted. It would have been…interesting, to be sure, but he wasn’t about to rush along something: especially with Kiju’s next words, which instantly caused Volyan’s expression to droop, his ears pinning back against his skull, “Oh…” was all he muttered. That…hurt, needless to say. “I suppose Brunhi was lucky to be a mercenary and travel with you…not an Emperor or Prince tied to a city and his people…” Volyan sighed, “How…how long to you expect to stay?” He knew that Kiju would leave sooner or later, warm bed, fresh food, a bath and now a fox or not here for him…he was a mercenary at heart and Volyan expected he’d leave; just…there is a difference between knowing it, and acknowledging it. Shoving those thoughts aside, Volyan nodded, “I wouldn’t be complaining…” Volyan mused and this time, he’d be the one to start it – bringing his muzzle to Kiju’s own. Worry about the future and enjoy the present, after all…

Kiju couldn’t help it, he really did want to stay, but he’d never be able to settle down in one spot for long. It wasn’t just because he was a mercenary, it was because of the fact that the tribe his family belonged to was semi-nomadic, they moved and settled down in various locations, though stayed in one spot if no enemies found it, or if it stayed plentiful. He thought about it for a moment…things were plentiful here, there was food, shelter, warmth, and now someone he loved all bundled into one. Did he really want to leave it for the lonely life of a mercenary, where his next meal might cost him his life? Now he felt worse about it because of those thoughts. Did he really want to leave? Of course not…but in order to stay, he’d have to be appointed to the position, and no one would think a scruffy ex-mercenary who held no title, lands, no wealth at all, should be so close to the Emperor.
“I…I guess he was.” ‘But none of us were lucky that our love was so…temporary.’ Was Kiju’s thoughts…but he never said it aloud. It wasn’t temporary in the thought, it was just that it was possible your lover might die in the next battle, or that you’d die, it was a scary thing. With Volyan, that fear was still there, but…considerably lessoned with the fact that he was the most powerful being in all of this empire. “I might just be staying until I’m not paid anymore…or until I’m not needed anymore. Either way, I’ll go…” though he whispered softly “Though now I don’t want to…” but he was silenced as the fox’s lips pressed to his own a second time, and Kiju’s eyes shut as every worry just seemed to disappear from that simple contact. The soft rumbling returned to his chest, having only first gotten it when he’d bathed here a week ago, and yet now here he was…kissing, and falling in love with his charge.
A paw moved up to cradle and rub the fox’s cheek while Kiju’s muzzle tilted slightly to the side so their lips and muzzles locked. All in all, it was a rather pleasant experience for the coyote, as thoughts of what he’d do to actually stay with this fox filled his mind, until he couldn’t take it any more, and parted the kiss “…I’ll find a way to stay Volyan, I promise…” he said, and then pressed back into it, scooting closer to be closer to this fox he’d fallen in love with during the brief time they’d known each other. Then again…no one said love had to happen after many years of knowing the other, nor did it happen in an instant, love just chose to strike when it seemed most opportune at the best of times, and sometimes when it should never have formed.

Volyan mrfed as Kiju broke the kiss, but his words did indeed make the fox feel better, there was no doubt about that. After all, if one is reassured that they won’t lose what they were attached to, they tend to become calmer, and happier. Volyan could only hope that the coyote’s words were true. But, just as Kiju’s worries melted away mere seconds ago, Volyan’s own followed suite, washing away from him as he got lost in the feel of…his lover? Boyfriend? Mate? He didn’t know, and he guessed that’d be but another question to ask Kiju in the very near future. And, as to the lack of land, money, and title…well, Volyan could care less. He was sure there would be many hushed slurs when it got out, but he’d make sure to give him a title by then…if only to keep him here with more than just love.
Finally breaking the lock of their muzzles, panting lightly now for a whole different reason, Volyan ran his paw along Kiju’s spin, just holding the coyote close. “If…if we keep this up I, I might just love you by the end of this night,” Volyan mused, feeling attached to the coyote in a whole different manner now. Volyan, remembering his questions from earlier, decided to bring it up now. “So…what are we?” Volyan muttered, tilting his head some what. “Boyfriends?” After all, Volyan only heard the term ‘lover’ used after the pair did more than just kiss. And the term mate was, more or less, like the human term of ‘husband’ or ‘wife’ and Volyan knew they weren’t anywhere near that level, at least, not yet. But, letting his mind wander to far into the future, he knew, would be a bad thing. If only if either of them ended up disappointed…after all, there was still a chance that Kiju might get tired of him.
Volyan then decided to ask another question, one that he knew wouldn’t take more than a second to answer, “Do you want to move into my room?” And, of course, there was the added part of ‘and share my bed’ hinted at the end of that, though Volyan didn’t think he’d need to voice it. And even if he did, he wouldn’t have minded doing so. And, to come up for a reason for Akhu and the rest of the palace, “After all…this poor little fox can’t defend himself against a female assassin. And having a skilled coyote in his room might just help him.” And Akhu would think this would be a way to collect more information, thus, both the Loyalist Volyan and everyday Fox Volyan get what they wanted.

Kiju couldn’t help but smile faintly, enjoying the close contact with a fox that didn’t have as high a risk of disappearing under a grave in the near future. His arms slipped around Volyan’s chest and helped to pull the coyote closer to his…well, his boyfriend one can suppose. “Hehe, then perhaps I shouldn’t stop…” he said, and grinned a bit, the pink tongue in his maw flashing out to give a soft lick along the side of the fox’s muzzle. “Of course…if you fall in love with me, I want it to be by your choice, not by how forward I am.” That was his hopes, if Volyan just loved him for what Kiju’s done, then it wouldn’t be entirely truthful, would it? He was dealing with one even more inexperienced than him, age difference or no…
“I believe we are boyfriends, yes…at least, I’d like to think of myself as that.” He said, and smiled whole heartedly, enjoying the missed feeling of a friendly warmth spreading through his body. Of course, that meant two things were going through him right now, and one of them he wouldn’t push for unless Volyan thought he was ready. For now though he just cuddled up against the fox, eyes closing to only be half-lidded in the dim light. “Mh…err…” he blushed at the question, and did take only a few moments, before nodding slowly “Yes, I do…” he looked up at Volyan, and blushed even more at that last bit, leaning close enough that his nose bumped up against the fox’s “I don’t want that if you don’t, it’ll be up to you Volyan.” Golden hued eyes stared into crystal clear blue ones, and just seemed to lock their gazes together, at least from the coyote’s perspective anyway.

“Trust me, if I fall in love with you, it’ll be of my own choice…” Volyan muttered. He wasn’t about to turn into Vindex, who declared his love to every female he bedded. No, Volyan wasn’t about to turn into that. After all, foxes tried to take the same mate year after year and…his great ancestors’ act of doing so rubbed off on him. “I won’t leave you…” Volyan whispered, just loud enough for Kiju to hear. “I promise I won’t…” After all, Volyan didn’t just love Kiju because he loved the feel of the coyote, no, after all, if he wanted that, he could have slept with any creature with soft fur. No, he cared for, and was slowly beginning to love him because of his personality. Male, female, it didn’t matter. It was the coyote that did, nothing more than that. After all, as anything aged, they can lose their looks, but hardly does one lose their personality.
Volyan knew of the coyote’s reaction to being held so close to his body, after all, it was hard to miss. And, Volyan had to admit that he couldn’t exactly be called innocent at that moment, either. He knew that if Kiju moved in, well…that it’d move from just kissing and holding one another to a whole other level. The question remaining was: ‘Am I ready for it’. Of course, Volyan could say he was and lie but…the more he thought about it, the more he came to a single conclusion. “I do want this…want you.” Volyan blushed at the words, and glanced to the side, looking at his reflection in the pool. He looked…happier than he had ever been. Turning his gaze back to meet the golden hued eyes before him, he muttered silently, “If you’ll have me…”

Kiju’s pricked ears caught the soft words of the fox, and he smiled at them even wider than before. He felt love, and is loved even, such a wonderful combination. His maw opened to try and say something, but he couldn’t think of anything better than “…thank you.” The coyote then leaned his head down on Volyan’s shoulder and closed his eyes, making a sound like a purring cat, just softer and more intentional than a subconscious act. “I promise I’ll never leave you so long as you want me Volyan…”
His ears pricked and quivered with sheer embarrassment as the fox announced he was ready for the next step, and even wanted it apparently. He lifted his head from Volyan’s shoulder to look back up at the fox, and smiled shyly “Of course I will Volyan, I would’ve…well, if you’d ever asked.” He said, and blushed while gently pressing into another kiss, only the press didn’t stop there. Instead, his paws held onto the fox as Kiju slowly lay back onto the floor of the bathing room, arms keeping wrapped around Volyan’s chest.
Once the coyote was on his back, he broke the kiss for a moment to breathe, and to open his eyes to look up into the fox’s once more “I do want you…so much, Volyan.” He said, and slid out of his vest, setting it off to the side, leaving him in not much more than his loincloth. Even for an amateur…it wouldn’t be too hard to figure out what he was supposed to do next…
