Slithering over the land, his scales pushing him along, his staff tapping onto the ground every so often, Bane’s greenish-brown body quickly and gracefully made its way into the city of Babylon. He’d heard stories of its greatness and glory as a young hatchling, and remembered them to this day. And now he had high intentions of seeing if it was really so ‘great’ and ‘glorious.’ And, he would soon learn that it wasn’t – At least, not anymore.
His tongue slid between his lips, and flickered at the tip, taking in the surrounding scents with curiosity. The expression he wore afterwards was hard to read – Either he cringed in distaste, or the snake was wearing a sickening smile. The stench of… Well – There were many scents; Death, rotting flesh, and others that some might consider detestable. Banespawn found them somewhat… enjoyable, though.
Glassy eyes fell upon a city of ruins. “The great city is no more, eh?” he asked himself with an amused look, continuing to slither forth. Inhabited or not, there still had to be some decently valuable treasures within, right? Such a thought greatly caught the serpent’s interest, and now he was no longer driven into the city by curiosity, but by greed.
Finally within the city’s boundaries, Banespawn found himself doing a bit of sight-seeing before anything. The land was rather glum, but very quiet – He knew he’d enjoy it here. But, he also knew he wouldn’t be staying. After so long, the same place grows dull, no matter what mysterious things lie within.
Again, his tongue flickered at the tip before being pulled back into his mouth. It would smell horrid to many others, though the stench was something else that Bane found somewhat alluring. The snake halted, and put the base of his staff down, trying to decide which direction to go in. It took another intake of scents by his tongue before he finally continued on straight. Truth be told, he still didn’t know where he was going, but he figured he was bound to find something.
Hours passed, and now the city was even darker than it had been. His blood temperature had dropped, and the snake felt a chill growing over him. But, he ignored it, and continued to move through the ruins, very slowly, but surely, losing hope that there was anything here to be found.
“This damned place is nothing but darkness and death. Not a sssingle jewel to be…” His voice trailed off as he saw something. He wasn’t sure exactly what it was, but it was clean enough to have caught what little light was in this place to gleam. The snake made his way toward it, and lowered his body to reach down and grab the gem. It was somewhat dirty from having been laying on the ground for God knows how long, but it was nothing that couldn’t be fixed.
“Well, well, what have we here?” he questioned silently, caressing his find gently. As it rested in one palm, the fingers of the other hand moved over it, feeling the details. There were a few scratches, he noticed, but they were small enough that nobody should notice them. He grinned, and flicked his tongue yet again, and then held the jewel up between his index finger and thumb, eyeing the shape. But, with such poor lighting, he could see nothing. “Hm… Perhapss there are more to be found,” he said. Again, his body lowered, and he set his staff down as he began to slowly dig through the dirt, making sure to be careful so that if anything fragile was hidden, it wouldn’t be damaged.
