After her encounter with Raphael, and the two other demons, Raven decided to go back to the forgotten city. All these events had distracted her from her main goal. Well, her main goal was now distorted…killing demons were still on the top of her list, but now that she was connected to two of them, she would ease up a little bit. She would no longer go hunting demons, but if one crossed her path, there was no doubt that she would kill it. Maybe the change of heart had to do with Damian messing with her head somehow, or maybe, just maybe, she wanted to start living life without looking at every shadow as an enemy. Demons could prove to be powerful allies, or gruesome enemies. For over 2000 years, Raven had walked alone, messing around with men here and there, but she never took another lover since her Alexander was murdered that fateful day, nor had a friend for very long. The few vampires she befriended envied her and soon left, humans grew old and died. Demons were out of the question. It was possible that she was growing lonely, and wanted a true friend, or maybe she just wanted power, but either way, Raphael fascinated her.
She pulled the ring he gave her from her pocket and held it between her dainty fingers, examining it. There was a blue diamond set in white gold with two smaller diamonds trailing down each of the sides. The ring was exquisite; Raven had never seen anything like it. It had taken her breath away when Raphael threw it to her, explaining that she only needed to put it on, and they could speak to one another, kind of like how she could speak with Damian without being in the same place. She had wondered why he’d given her a ring so beautiful, a ring that could obviously be used as something else…
Raven blinked, bringing her back to her senses and out of her daydreams as she slid the ring back into her pocket. She was standing in front of the castle in Babylon, trying to picture it as it once was, but unable to. It stood in front of her, dark and gloomy. All it needs is a womans touch… She thought to herself, smirking. Slowly, she climbed the crumbling steps, carefully avoiding the bones that littered them. Before she even entered the castle, she could smell the musty dampness. The moment she stepped through the door, she could sense two beings, one a demon, and the other, an elf. They both had gone, but the presence of their auras still lingered, as if the castle didn’t really let anyone truly leave. Memories of every being stayed trapped in the castle forever.
Raven knelt down on the glass-like obsidian floor and gingerly touched a skull that lay there. Her eyes rolled back in her head and her eyelids fluttered. The old, decrepit thing was giving her a vision of its life. The skull had belonged to a human. At first he was a poor peasant, and then lived a short life of luxury as a palace guard. His last memory alive was of a handsome man with bright green eyes, snuffing his life with ease.
The next skull had a different story altogether, but its last memory was also of a handsome man with bright green eyes. Raven moved from skeleton to skeleton, learning the history of each. She was able to get memories only when she touched a skull, but she was still able to see the persons life when she touched any part of the skeleton. Each and every thing she touched had either a memory, or something to do with the handsome man with the bright green eyes.
This brought a great deal of wonderment to Raven. Who was this man…and was he still alive? The man never changed, though the skeletons in the large open throne room were of all different ages. Another thing that clouded Ravens thoughts was her ability to see these visions. Why her? Did this have something to do with the demons? Or was it because she was the heir to this throne? So many questions, yet who would answer them? She was sure that Damian, Cyrax or Raphael would be as confused as she was on the subject. Raven stood back up to gauge her surroundings better. There was throne at the head of the room, and she moved lazily towards it, remembering her human life. She sat down on the cool stone and leaned her head on the back of the royal chair. Her hands stretched out, lying on the arms of the chair and her eyes fluttered closed, immersed in memories. She hadn’t been sitting for long, when a voice that came from everywhere and nowhere at the same time, spoke to her.
“I’ve been waiting a very long time for you…Deianeira.”
The voice was cool and soothing, almost angelic, but it had a hint of malice to it. It brought anger to her, yet soothed her at the same time. No one held so much power in just words alone. Raven, startled, jumped to her feet, looking around for the source of the voice, but to no avail.
“Who..what…where are you??”
Raven almost demanded the voice to answer her, but it just laughed. Her anger was trying to leak out, but something was pushing it back, just making Raven feel calm and somewhat dazed.
“Oh, so many questions my dear Deianeira”
The voice laughed again.
“I have your answers, all you need to do is follow the light.”
Then the voice was gone, along with the calming presence, and Raven almost exploded. She paced back and forth, trying to comprehend what she had heard when a green light appeared in front of her. It was almost blinding, but beautiful at the same time. It danced around her face, and she batted at it, trying to get it away from her. She was mesmerized by it, how could a ball of light be so wondrous? It felt like she stood there, staring at it for ages when it zipped away. The voice had told her to follow the light, and Raven was sure that this is what he meant. Though she wasn’t sure she wanted to follow it. Yes, it would give her answers, but the masculine voice wanted her to come to him. She wasn’t positive that it was a good idea, but then again, when have any of her decisions been a good idea? She had merely seconds to decide if she wanted to follow the light, otherwise it would be lost. Her mind was made when she sped off after it.
It took her through the castle at an amazing speed, yet Raven kept up with it. Even with her great memory and sense of direction, she’d never be able to find her way back with ease. One thing was for sure though, the light was leading her down, how far, she didn’t know. The feeling uneasiness crept into her stomach, yet as soon as it did, it was pushed away.
The light slowed down when it reached a heavy metal door, then disappeared through the cracks. Once the light was gone, the corridor was pitch black, and Raven could sense nothing. No creatures or life of any sort. She wanted to be scared, but that strange feeling of calm washed over her once again. Before she was able to voice any questions, the large door opened, and the green light gleamed. Raven was drawn inside, drawn towards the light, whether she wanted to move or not. Slowly, she moved towards the light, and once inside, the door slammed shut. She could hear a locking mechanism turning, rendering it impossible for her to escape.
The room was small and dark, the only light coming from the two bright green lights in the corner of the room. Two lights… Raven frowned, beginning to form a question, but before she could, he stepped into view. Normally she’d be able to see in the dark, her vampire eyes allowing her to do so, but something was stopping her, and she could only guess that it had something to do with this man.
All of a sudden, candles came to life around the entire room, and she could again see clearly. It was him! The man from the memories! Raven almost recoiled in horror. This man was the death of all those people, and now she was alone in a room with him! Though who he was exactly, she didn’t know. He lowered his glowing green eyes to the ground, and folded his arms behind his back, walking around the small room in front of Raven.
“Deianeira…had I known it would be this easy, I would have come for you long ago.”
Raven looked up at him, wanting to hate him, but a feeling of adoration filled her. This man…he was so handsome…
“First, I think I owe you an explanation.”
His rich masculine voice filled Raven with desire, and all sense of danger left her, despite her inner warnings.
“My name is Laorav. My surname is of no importance. I, like you, am also Babylonian, a true Babylonian, I might add, though I was created before you. I was there when you were born and I was there when you…died.”
He paused, but Raven kept her eyes trained on his every movement. She wanted him to come to her and hold her in his big strong arms. Laorav looked over at Raven and smiled, as if he knew what she was thinking, then continued on.
“I was with your Alexander when he died as well.”
Raven snapped back to her senses at his words, feeling her anger rise, only to be pushed back down again, though her feelings of longing for Laorav disappeared. She gapped at him open mouth, beginning to speak, but he cut her off, though this time his voice held some of the malice she’d first heard.
“I never meant for him to be tortured, I never actually meant for him to die, but things got out of hand. His captors were having too much fun, and I wasn’t able to stop them. They were older than me at the time, and I was not strong enough. When I saw the pain it caused you, I hated myself for it. Once he was brutally killed, I left. It was the first time I’d ever left those who created me… Then I saw you become a vampire, and learned of your quest to kill all demons. I was ashamed of myself, which caused my powers to fail me, making me weak. I wanted you Raven, I wanted you with all my being. I thought that if I made it look like Alexander left you, you’d open yourself to another man. I planned on making you into a demon too…”
He trailed off, and Ravens fury broke through the sereneness that Laorav was impressing upon her. She lunged at him, but he held up a hand lazily, freezing her in place. Calm once again washed over her and he continued his story.
“I never meant to hurt you Deianeira; I just lusted after you like any sane man would. I tried to ignore it, but soon my lust consumed me, and I couldn’t push you out of my mind. The day you met Alexander was they day I was going to tell you how I felt, but you were so happy with him, I just couldn’t. I kept my distance, yet always watching you. Then he married you, and I thought that was the day I would die. I always had thought of myself as your guardian angel, preventing any harm to you. Anytime you were in trouble, I made sure you made it out safely, but you never knew. I hated myself for never making myself known; I never gave you the chance to meet me. Maybe if I had, we’d be together now.”
Laorav hung his head in sorrow, and his shoulders slumped. After a minute of silence, he gazed back at Raven with those beautiful green eyes and moved to her, letting his hands trail down her arms, then softly holding her hands. Raven just stared at him, not knowing what to think.
“Even when you were a freshly made vampire, I feared you. Had you known the truth, you’d have hated me with all your being, granted you probably do now, though I’m not letting your emotions shine through. I was as upset as you were at Alexander’s death, though for different reasons. Alexander was a good man, and it pains me to realize that his death was partly my fault. I wanted to avenge his death like you, though I never revealed myself to you, until now. I went after my makers when I was strong enough. The two demons responsible for his death are dead. I am their only creation, so unless you wish to kill me, Alexander has been avenged, though I believe he has been avenged regardless. You no longer need to hunt demons; none of them are in any way related to his killers. Even though I was powerful enough to kill my makers, I still feared you. I stayed out of your way, you were filled with vengeance. Had we come in contact, you would have killed me. Even if my powers hadn’t failed me, I think I would have let you kill me out of sorrow. I stayed away. You were no longer the Deianeira that I loved, you were an evil being. Now you have opened yourself up to Raphael…”
He sneered when he spoke of the other vampires name.
“If you opened up to him…I thought that now…we can be how I’ve always dreamed we would be…”
Laorav released Raven from his serenity spell, but held onto her hands firm, while she tried to comprehend everything that he said.
“Think Deianeira…together we could restore Babylon to its former glory! For you no longer are the only one who remembers it as it once was! Together we could rule. I am more powerful than you could ever imagine...”
Raven continued to stare into his beautiful green eyes, not being able to speak. She was in shock. Laorav took this opportunity to do something he had longed to do for over 2000 years. He leaned in and placed his lips upon hers, but the kiss was short lived because Raven turned her head and pulled away from his grip on her hands. Once again she was pacing back and forth, her mind racing. She stopped and looked up at Laorav, a look of hurt on his face.
He was a demon! And he was hopelessly in love with her! She had never seen this man in her life, but he’d known her since she was born, and protected her as well. There were many times in her human life that she felt a presence watching over her. The same presence protected her. She was a daredevil even in life, and time after time she thought she was going to die, but unexplained miracles happened, and she lived. She owed her life to him…but also Alexanders death. She didn’t know whether to hate him or thank him. But one thing was for sure…no matter what happened, she would not take him as her lover. She spoke softly, but her voice was strong.
“Laorav, I cannot hate you, as much as I want to. I guess I owe my existence to you…in a way I always knew you were there, but never knew who, or what you were. I can see that you didn’t mean for my Alexander to die, but I can never forgive you for taking him away from me…”
The look on his face showed no surprise, it was almost as if he expected her response, yet it was still filled with sorrow. It was as if he knew what she was going to say next. Raven took a deep breath and began speaking again.
“Even if I wanted to, I don’t think I could bring myself to kill you. But this doesn’t mean that I want to be with you.”
Raven paused and shook her head before continuing again.
“Maybe we’d be together today had you not been so shy, but do not kill yourself over it. For 2000 years I’ve not taken a lover, Raphael is the closest thing, but I doubt that he would have become that even if things had things worked out. What I’m trying to say Laorav, is that I don’t think I’m capable of loving anyone but Alexander. Even if you’d found me before I met him, I would never have felt the way about you that I did about him. It’s not your fault; it’s just how I am. He was my soul mate, and we were meant to be together.”
Raven was overcome with amazement at her reaction to this demon. He was a demon! Had his confession changed her mind about them? Or was it just that he’d saved her life on numerous occasions. Either way, she really couldn’t bring herself to hate him, or even want to kill him.
His face was full of sadness, though he was surprised. He had expected her to hate him, try to kill him on the spot. She wouldn’t have been able to though, his powers greatly surpassed her own. He’d trained for over 2000 years to make sure of that. Never would he kill her, but he needed to make sure she couldn’t kill him either. Though if she had wanted to kill him, he probably would have let her out of heartbreak alone.
Raven couldn’t believe her feelings of compassion for the demon, but they were there, and she moved back to him, placing her hand on his shoulders.
“Laorav, things between us will never be, but we can still be friends. In my heart I know you are telling me the truth, and that is something I cherish most. I believe that friends can be one of the strongest forces on this planet.”
She smiled at him, and kissed him on the cheek before staring back into his gorgeous green eyes.
“I only ask that you don’t use your Serenity Charm on me to make me want you, because we both know my feelings would not be true.”
Laorav smiled back at her, showing his perfect teeth, and Raven felt the burning desire for him in an instant, then fade away. It was his way of telling her that he agreed, but would still mess with her in a playful way. Raven didn’t much like it, but figured it was the best she was going to get. Laorav held her hands once again and spoke with a wink.
“Now, let’s restore Babylon. The city needs its Queen back.”
She pulled the ring he gave her from her pocket and held it between her dainty fingers, examining it. There was a blue diamond set in white gold with two smaller diamonds trailing down each of the sides. The ring was exquisite; Raven had never seen anything like it.
