“Ok then Sion, I believe it’s finally time for your first lesson in the art of Summoning.” The human said. Yes, his parents had bought the services of a human to teach their young kit how to become a summoner when he grew up. You see, about a week ago, while he was sleeping, he had had a nightmare, and woke up to be comforted by, not his parents, but a very large wolf, who told the kit his name was Fenrir. Fenrir had proved to be a capable father for the young fox, since his real father was always busy with trying to find out how best to defeat his opponents in court intrigues so that he could rise higher in the ranks. So, Fenrir had taken it upon himself to raise the young kit, and had been doing quite a good job of it for the week he had been in this realm, becoming Sion’s guardian of sorts.
The main reason why his parents had assigned him to learn the arts was because he had a ‘problem’ with his summon: it couldn’t be un-summoned. So, Fenrir was here to stay, and no other summoner had the power to actually dismiss the large wolf to whatever realm it had come from. No one could understand why, least of all the summoners, and it had begun to worry Sion’s parents when he kept talking to the large wolf like it could speak back. He had said that he could hear Fenrir’s words in his head. Luckily, a mage who had the same ability identified it as a minor gift in telepathy, and calmed their fears that their son was going mental. So, now, Sion currently sat in a library for his first lesson with his teacher, Sir Lauraine, who would hopefully teach him to be able to control his abilities.
Fenrir was also in that room, curled up around the young fox, who was using him to prop up his back like a big, fuzzy chair. The young fox smiled at his teacher and spoke “Okie mister Lauraine.” He said, and crossed his legs to be in a more comfortable position. The wolf was also watching the teacher, as if saying ‘Don’t try anything funny’, and he got the desired, and amusing response, of seeing the human swallow a lump. The fox didn’t notice any of this, and just waited for his lesson to start, his tail idly swaying from side to side on the floor.
It took a few moments for Lauraine to recover himself, and begin the lesson. “Yes, now then…um, firstly, we know that you have the powers to become a summoner, correct?” Sion and Fenrir exchanged glances with each other, then looked up at the human at the same time. Lauraine paused nervously “Uh…well, yes, that is obvious. Anyway, I am here to instruct you in the art of summoning, so that you may control your gifts, and so that your gifts do not control you.” The fox smiled and nodded, his tail wagging a little faster at this. Finally he would learn something interesting!
“Now then, we shall begin your lesson with summoning something small, like this.” Lauraine held up his palm that had nothing in it, but that changed soon as, in a puff of smoke, a small mouse appeared. Sion looked at it and squeaked with glee, and surprise from its sudden appearance. Fenrir, meanwhile, looked like he was hungry… “Sion, I plan to get you to be able to do that by the end of this day.” He said, then the mouse disappeared in another puff of smoke. The young fox looked up at the puff of smoke, then at the human’s face and nodded, his tail continuing to wag.
‘Sion, you do realize that this will take a lot of hard work and studying for you to accomplish this, correct?’ Fenrir said into the boy’s head.
Sion nodded, and turned to look at the wolf’s huge head “Uh huh, I know. But it’ll be lots more interesting than math.” The wolf let out a soft snort that sounded like a laugh, and nodded slowly, before laying his head upon his dinner platter sized paws. Sion then turned to look up at his tutor again, while he was rummaging around in his bag for something. He pulled up an extremely large book, and set it in front of the young fox “Here, this is every summon I’ve ever accomplished in my time. I would like for you to read through it all eventually, by the time you have, I will consider my lessons with you complete.” The boy looked in startlement at the sheer size of the book, being at least a couple thousand pages long. “Wow…” was all he said.
Lauraine smiled and nodded, then set another book on top of it, this one laughable in length compared to the other “This is the book I would like for you to read tonight. I will be staying here with your parents until your lessons are complete. If there is anything you would like to ask me, just come to the library and ask, whether it be a difficult word, or something that needs explaining.” Sion nodded absently while opening the book and flipping through a few pages to browse the pictures…for now anyway. “Okie Mister Lauraine…” he said quietly. Fenrir peered over the kit’s shoulder to look at the book himself, and Sion leaned a bit over to let the wolf have a better view.
‘This book looks complicated…and remember, you can also ask me if you have anything you wish to know about. I know just as much as this human does, do not worry.’
Sion smiled and nodded, giving the large wolf a nuzzle to his cheek “Thanks Fenrir.” He said, then picked up the book and set it in his lap to start reading through it while Lauraine got the rest of the lesson ready. The human was taking out various objects and some ingredients needed for the summoning of larger creatures than a simple mouse or rabbit. A servant came in and set some breakfast down on a tray, plus another tray for Fenrir that consisted of large chunks of meat. Sion smiled and said his thank-yous, then took some of the breakfast so that he could settle his growly stomach.
While Sion ate, Lauraine finally had gotten everything out, and was now making a small circle in the middle of the library so that Sion could practice summoning his first creature, while the human also made another circle near-by in case something needed to be summoned…just in case Sion summoned the wrong thing, as it was known to happen with apprentices. “Alright Sion, come over here please.” The fox’s pure silver and white ears perked up, and he looked over at where Lauraine was standing with his hands on his hips. Sion closed the book he was reading after saving his place, then stood up and padded over to his tutor, the large wolf staying where he was to finish his meal.
“Now then Sion, this…” he gestured with his hand at the circle “Is what’s known as a Summoning Circle. In it, is where you would summon the creature you wish to summon.” Sion blinked and looked up at Lauraine “Then how come you could summon that mousie into your paw…err…hand?” Lauraine smiled a bit and held up his hand, where a very small Summoning Circle was drawn “Because I did this…it is possible to make yourself a Summoning Circle. Keep that in mind.” Sion nodded and then looked down at the circle, pointing to all the various runes written along its circumference “What’re those?” Lauraine moved to stand beside the young fox before answering “Those are runes, basically they’re written to say what you want, but in the language of magic. Even if our type of magic is in the art of summoning, rather than fire or ice, it’s still considered magic.” The young fox then nodded, understanding “Ohhhh…okies.”
“Now, there are two reasons why you would want to create a summoning circle. One reason is because you want the creature you are about to summon to feel safe, due to the aura of protection around it. That is what these runes are for that I’ve drawn. The other kind of summoning, is a demon summoning. When you perform a demon summoning, which I hope you never will…” he said, looking askance at the silvery fox “You want to invert the runes, so that the spell of protection is cast to keep the demon inside of its barrier until you’ve managed to overpower and control it. We will only be performing summons that want to feel safe before they arrive in our world.”
Sion nods, and kneels down to look at the runes more closely, his tail slowly wagging behind him “So…does the spell not work if you don’t have these rune thingies?” he asked. “Oh, it will work…sort of. You see, the art of summoning is all in the mage who wishes to cast it, however, the reason why you want this, is because you want the creature you are summoning to trust you, or else it will not even come to you.” The fox nodded “Oh…” Lauraine continued “Now, I want you to get on your knees in the middle of that circle right there, just don’t disturb any of the markings while you’re getting inside.”
The young fox nodded, and stood, then carefully tip-pawed his way into the middle of the circle, lowering himself down onto his knees once he was in the middle of it, and keeping his tail up so it wouldn’t disturb the lines marked on the library floor. Fenrir had finished his meal, and got up to pad over to stand near the Summoning Circle, where he then sat down a ways away to watch his ‘son’. Lauraine took a nervous step away from the large wolf, before opening up a book “Now then, I want you to close your eyes, concentrate, and repeat after me…”
Sion nodded, and did as his instructor asked while repeating the words spoken out of the magic book. For each word he said, one section of the summoning circle glowed, then the next one, then the next, each of the eight sections glowing in turn, until they all were glowing. Then, the pace increased, and got faster and faster, each of the words spoken over and over in the exact same order, the ring and its sections glowing brighter and brighter, until with a flash of light…the fox was surrounded by a ring of rainbow-y light, almost like an aurora borealis type effect. “Good job Sion…” the human looked very startled that such a young child could call up a Summoning Circle on his first try. “Now then, I want you to say the name of your summon, say it clearly, and do not make a mistake.” Lauraine looked into the book for a moment “The name is Elaina.”
The young fox gave a slight nod, and spoke out the name “Elaina.” There was a small flash of light across from the fox within the ring, and a creature that looked like a mix between a fox and a rabbit suddenly appeared in front of Sion.
Lauraine looked at it and nodded, then closed the book “Good job Sion, you’ve performed your first summon…” Sion opened his eyes to look at the creature, and smiled happily, his tail wagging rapidly behind him. The creature, Elaina, looked around, then sniffed at the fox’s paw, before shrugging and sitting down to look up at ‘her’ summoner. The glowing of the Summoning Circle began to fade, until it was nothing but white lines on the floor again, although they did dimly glow a bit. Elaina began to move around the room, sniffing at various things, while all three occupants of the room watched it. “Now, we shall see if you can un-summon that creature.” Sion nodded and stood up slowly, wobbled a bit, then slumped back to the ground.
He put a paw to his head “Mister Lauraine, I feel funny…” Lauraine just merely nodded and chuckled quietly “No doubt you’re most likely drained from all of that…do not worry, even I would be fairly weak after summoning something.” Sion nodded and just sat there while the human reached into his pocket, and pulled out a little bar “Here, eat this. It’ll help.” Sion took it with a thank you, and began munching on it, finding that the bar did indeed help to get his energy going again.
By the time he was recovered to a reasonable level again, the summoned Elaina had grown bored with her exploration, and come to sit in front of Fenrir, the large wolf and she seeming to have a conversation together. Sion stood up slowly, and used Fenrir as a support of sorts until he could get his legs working fully again, then stood normally. Lauraine looked up from the book he had been reading, and nodded, taking off his glasses to move over to the three “Alright, I believe it’s time to continue your lessons. To un-summon is much easier than summoning, as it requires a lot less time and preparation.”
The young fox nodded and looked down at Elaina, who must’ve said her good-byes, since she had turned away from the large wolf to look back up at Sion. “Ok, first of all, you will need to say her name, then say Almsivi, which means to dismiss or let go.” Sion nodded again, then tilted his head a bit “Um, ok…” Lauraine looked at his student “Don’t forget to concentrate.” Sion nodded and concentrated on the cute little creature “Elaina, Almsivi.” Elaina smiled, then disappeared in a puff of blue, sparkly smoke. When it cleared, she was no more. All three in the room smiled, although Sion more so due to the sheer glee at such a…well, success for his first time. “Good job young one, you’re pretty good at this. Better than I was…” He mumbled the last part under his breath.
Sion didn’t catch it, but Fenrir did, and looked up at Lauraine to give him a long, wordless look of the same message as before. The human took another step away from the pair, while Sion remained blissfully unaware of the silent exchange between the two. He got an even better reward for his good work than words, when the large wolf licked the kit’s cheek, although to Sion, it just made the left side of his face completely wet, making him go “Eww!” then giggle and hug Fenrir around his thick neck, the bow-tied tail of the fox wagging like crazy. The large wolf, despite his fearsome appearance, simply smiled and wagged his own tail while nuzzling his adopted son, looking completely harmless for that one moment in time.
The rest of the day continued with Sion learning how to summon various small creatures, until finally he was too exhausted that even the energy bars that Lauraine supplied were of no use. So, the human tutor finally let the kit go to bed, Fenrir carrying Sion up to his room, where he, instead of putting him in his bed, just slowly lay down on the floor, and curled up around the young fox, keeping the sleeping kit warm, and safe.
The main reason why his parents had assigned him to learn the arts was because he had a ‘problem’ with his summon: it couldn’t be un-summoned.
